QUEENS, N.Y. - The St. John's men's tennis team split play this weekend, taking a match from Bingamton, 6-1, on Saturday in Brooklyn, before falling to Cornell, 5-2, at Army's Lichtenberg Tennis Center in West Point, N.Y. on Sunday. The split gave the Red Storm a 4-5 overall record, while Binghamton dropped to 6-7 and the Big Red improved to 4-4.
The match in Brooklyn started with a doubles-point win for the Red Storm, as the team defeated the Bearcats at Nos. 1 and 2. St. John's nearly swept the singles points, but a loss at No. 6 gave Binghamton its only tally of the night. Juniors Artem Vlasenko, Alex Svetlakov and Gustavo Loza led the charge with wins at Nos. 1, 2 and 3, respectively. Sophomore Martin Kosut picked up the win at No. 4 and freshman Pavel Cerny rounded out the scoring for the Red Storm with a 6-4, 6-5 straight-set win over Arnav Jain.
St. John's then traveled up the Thruway to take on the Cornell Big Red on Sunday for a neutral site matchup. The match started the same as Saturday's, with the teams of Svetlakov/Vlaskenko and sophomore Derek Wallensteen/Kosut winning at Nos. 1 and 2 again, and to grab the doubles point for the Red Storm. In singles, Vlasenko was the only player to win a point for St. John's with a 6-1, 4-6, 6-3 win over Army's top man, Kyle Doppelt, at the No. 1 position. The Big Red took the points at Nos. 2-6.
The men's tennis team returns to action on Saturday, March 15, when the Red Storm travels down to the nation's capital for a pair of matches. St. John's will open with a match against BIG EAST opponent Georgetown before an afternoon tilt with Boston College.
