Golebiewski Wins Gold; Szele Captures Silver At National Championships

QUEENS, N.Y. - St. John's fencing seniors Monika Golebiewski and Reka Szele earned the gold and silver medals, respectively, at the 2008 NCAA National Championships held at St. John Arena at The Ohio State University on Friday afternoon.
Golebiewski defeated Oksana Dmytruk of Ohio State in the foil, 15-7, winning the Gold Medal bout. Golebiewski defeated Adi Nott of Notre Dame, 15-6, to advance to the final round.
Fellow classmate Szele fell short of the gold in sudden death to Kelley Hurley of Notre Dame, 11-10, receiving the silver medal in the epee. Szele defeated Ewa Nelip, also from Notre Dame, 15-4, in the epee, en route to the gold medal round.
As a team, the women finished fourth overall in the NCAA National Championships trailing Notre Dame, Ohio State and Columbia, respectively.
The men's team will compete Saturday and Sunday at the French Field House on the campus of The Ohio State University.
