Women's Tennis Finishes Up Play In Norfolk

QUEENS, N.Y. - The St. John's women's tennis team won a match, then lost one, this weekend in Norfolk, Va. The Red Storm defeated the University of North Carolina Wilmington, 5-2, on Saturday, before falling to Old Dominion by the same score on Sunday.
With the split, the Red Storm's record now stands at 2-5 in the spring. UNCW falls to 5-2-1, while Old Dominion improves to 8-5 overall.
Against UNCW, the Red Storm captured the doubles point after wins at No. 1 and No. 3. In singles action, St. John's racked up the wins as senior Maria Zivcicova defeated the Lady Seahawks' top spot player, Priscilla Roberts, 6-4, 4-6, 10-7 at No. 1, graduate student Alison Adamski picked up the win at No. 2, senior Mariana Chachua won at No. 3 and freshman Jenny Yonkus took her match at No. 6. The Red Storm enjoyed its second win of the season, taking the match with UNCW, 5-2.
Sunday did not prove as well for St. John's, as Old Dominion started the day right by taking the always important doubles point, despite an 8-4 Red Storm win at No. 1 by Zivcicova and Adamski. At the No. 4 singles spot, freshman Emily Barnett split the first two sets with the Lady Monarchs' Barbara Costa, before Costa retired halfway through the third set with Barnett leading 3-2. Sophomore Ira Aleksova defeated ODU's Daniela Cohen, 6-2, 6-4, for St. John's only other point of the match as the Red Storm fell to Old Dominion, 5-2.
The St. John's women's tennis team returns to action on Wednesday, March 12 when the Red Storm play host to BIG EAST rivals, Seton Hall. The match is set to being at 2 p.m.
