QUEENS, N.Y. - The St. John's men's tennis team had a tough time against Penn on Wednesday, as the squad lost its match by the score of 5-2. The Red Storm's record now stands at 5-8, while the Quakers improve to 9-7.
Penn captured the doubles point with a straight sweep of the Red Storm rotation. The St. John's pair of sophomore Derek Wallensteen / freshman Pavel Cerny put up the best fight for the Red Storm, but fell just short of the victory over the Quakers' Adam Schwartz/Justen Roth, 8-7.
In singles play, STJ earned its two points of the day with wins at the No. 2 and 5 spots. Junior Alex Svetlakov defeated Penn's Justin Fox in straight sets, 6-0, 6-3, to earn the victory at No. 2. Freshman Asaf Honig also won his matchup against Justen Roth, 6-3, 7-5. However, with its four wins in singles, the Quakers went on to the 5-2 match win.
Up next for the Red Storm men's tennis is a three-match homestand this weekend. The team hosts Stony Brook on Friday, March 28 at 3 p.m. before a doubleheader on Saturday March 29 against BIG EAST foe UConn at 10 a.m. and Monmouth at 2 p.m.
