STJ Men's Tennis Storms Past Monmouth, 7-0

QUEENS, N.Y. - In its last regular season match before the BIG EAST Tournament, the St. John's men's tennis team picked up a key victory with a 7-0 win over the Monmouth Hawks Tuesday afternoon on the Courts at St. John's, 7-0. With the win, STJ improved its record to an even 10-10 for the spring season, while Monmouth fell to 4-11.
In doubles play, the Nos. 1 and 2 spots won their matches 8-4 and 8-3, respectively. The No. 3 pair of freshman Pavel Cerny/sophomore Derek Wallensteen had to go to a tie-break before defeating the Hawk's duo of Pedro Bruno/Vik Gupta, 9-8 (8-6).
St. John's was victorious at every position in singles, starting with the No. 3 spot where sophomore Martin Kosut was up 5-1 before his opponent retired. Then junior Artem Vlasenko won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1, before fellow classmate Jordan Talbot clinched the match with a 6-3, 6-0 win at No. 5. Cerny recorded the next point for St. John's by winning 6-0, 6-2 at No. 4. The newcomers, junior Gustavo Loza and freshman Asaf Honig, rounded out the scoring for the Red Storm with 6-3, 6-3 and 6-1, 6-0 wins at Nos. 2 and 6, respectively.
The Red Storm returns to action on Friday, April 18, when the team will open up in the first round of the BIG EAST Championships in Tampa, Fla. The men earned a No. 7 seed and will take on second-seeded Louisville at 9 a.m. on the Andros Dorm Courts on the campus of the University of South Florida.
