QUEENS, N.Y. - The St. John's men's tennis team fell to the Old Dominion Monarchs, 4-1, Sunday afternoon in Norfolk, Va. at ODU's brand new Folkes-Stevens Indoor Tennis Center. The Red Storm did however escape the weekend with a split after yesterday's win over No. 55 Radford and its record now stands 8-9. ODU improves to 17-14 with the win.
St. John's won its only point of the day by capturing the doubles point with wins at the Nos. 1 and 2 spots. The Red Storm pair of juniors Artem Vlasenko/Gustavo Loza won, 8-5, at the top spot over ODU's Matt Fawcett/Timo Gehrke. The duo of junior Alex Svetlakov/sophomore Martin Kosut bested Aleksandr Seleznev/Tobias Fanselow, 8-4, and the two victories gave St. John's an early 1-0 lead.
The Monarchs' top four singles spots swept St. John's in straight sets in each match, en route to the 4-1 win. Freshmen Pavel Cerny and Asaf Honig did not finish their matches at the Nos. 5 and 6 spots, respectively, Cerny was up 3-2 in the first set.
The men's tennis team returns to action on Tuesday, April 8, when the team squares off with Radford University, the alma mater of head coach Eric Rebhuhn. The match is scheduled to start at 2 p.m. on the Courts at St. John's.
