QUEENS, N.Y. - Senior shortstop Jeff Grantham was named the BIG EAST Player of the Week, while junior pitcher Scott Barnes was named to the weekly honor roll after a 4-1 week for the St. John's baseball team. The honor for Grantham marks the first career Player of the Week honor for the senior. Barnes, meanwhile, earns his seventh career BIG EAST honor.
Grantham batted .526 (10-for-19) with seven RBI in the five games. The captain also had an .842 slugging percentage, three doubles, a walk off home run and a .571 on-base percentage.
In the first game of a doubleheader against Iona, Grantham was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a stolen base. The senior was 2-for-4 with three runs scored and a pair of RBI doubles in the second game.
Grantham opened a doubleheader against USF with a 3-for-4 day at the plate. The senior had three RBI singles to help St. John's to an 8-1 win in the opener. In the second game of the day, Grantham was also 3-for-4. After St. John's scored twice in the bottom of the ninth to tie the game at 3-3, Grantham led off the tenth with a walk off home run to give the Red Storm a 4-3 win. The home run was Grantham's second of the season and second of his career. An 0-for-4 day on Sunday snapped a career-long 11-game hitting streak for Grantham.
Barnes earned his spot on the BIG EAST weekly honor roll after a strong performance in an 8-1 win against USF.
The lefty improved to 6-3 on the year after allowing just two hits in 7.0 shutout innings. Barnes struck out nine batters and allowed just two runners to reach second base. The southpaw retired the first eight batters of the game and did not allow a hit until the fourth inning. With nine strikeouts, Barnes also moved into a tie for third place all-time at St. John's with 249 career strikeouts.
Barnes is now 1-0 with a 0.68 ERA over his past two starts. The lefty has 21 strikeouts in 13.1 innings and has allowed just a .149 opponent batting average over this period.
St. John's concludes its regular season schedule with a three game set at Villanova from May 15-17.
