QUEENS, N.Y. - At the last moment and without even taking a practice round, former St. John's golfer Andrew Svoboda was called upon as the first alternate at this year's US Open at Torrey Pines Golf Club in San Diego Calif. Even though Svoboda did not have a chance to become familiarized with the course, he still shot well in the first round of the major, finishing with a six-over 77 and currently stands tied for 100 out of a field of 151 competitors.
"It is great that he has a chance to go out and compete against the best," said St. John's head golf coach Frank Darby. "Andrew is a special player and even without the benefit of a practice round he has still played very well. I am excited that he has a chance to prove he belongs with the best the world has to offer."
Svoboda, a native of Larchmont, N.Y., turned pro in 2004. The former St. John's golf captain tallied two birdies in the first round and looks to better his score on the second day of play now that he has played a round on the historic course.
