Red Storm Fencing Competes At NAC D Juniors

QUEENS, N.Y. - The St. John's men's and women's fencing teams traveled to Louisville, Ky., for the North American Cup (NAC) D Division I/Juniors tournament. Dora Varga, Dagmara Wozniak, Tanya Novakovska, Joanna Guy and Daryl Homer finished in the top 20 in the tournament, which was held at the Kentucky International Convention Center from Jan. 16 -19.
Varga, a senior and 13-time Hungarian national champion, led the women's sabre team finishing third, while sophomore Wozniak finished ninth. Novakovska, a 2008 All-American, finished third in the epee, while Guy placed 17th.
On the men's side, Homer finished 12th in the sabre. The freshman and Bronx, N.Y., native recently finished seventh in the NAC C men's sabre tournament in December.
The Red Storm fencing teams return to action on Jan. 24 for the St. John's Invitational. The squad will compete against Notre Dame, Ohio State, Columbia and Harvard. The following day, the team will participate in the New York University Invitational. Contending at the event will be NYU, Columbia, Notre Dame, Ohio State and Wayne State.
