St. John's Fencing Competes At NYU Invitational

QUEENS, N.Y. - The St. John's men's and women's fencing teams competed in the annual NYU Invitational at the Jerome S. Coles Sports Center in Manhattan. Four of the top 10 teams ranked in the USFCA College Fencing Coach's poll competed as No. 2 Notre Dame, No. 3 Ohio State, No. 4 Columbia University and No. 9 St. John's were all in attendance.
The Red Storm participated in five of the six rounds at the invitational. In the first round, freshmen Daryl Homer, Bobby Gobin and Alejandro Rojas set the tone for the Red Storm defeating Wayne State 8-1 in the sabre. The men's foil was defeated 7-2 while men's epee fell 5-4, but STJ won the first round overall, 14-13.
The women won in impressive fashion, defeating Wayne State 26-1. Seniors Dora Varga and Joanna Guy, junior Tanya Novakovska, sophomores Dagmara Wozniak and Martyna Wieczorek, and freshman Jenna Mullarkey had strong performances in sabre and epee that led to an undefeated round posting an 18-0 record. Freshmen Alanna Dunn and Christine Zazzera combined to finish 8-1 in foil.
In round two, the men fell to Ohio State, but gained ten points for the Red Storm while the women earned nine points, and also fell to the Buckeyes.
In the third round, the men defeated host NYU 16-11 and the women also got by NYU, 21-6. The men's sabre and women's epee won 8-1, while women's sabre had another undefeated bout, 9-0.
Against Notre Dame, the Red Storm men and women fell 19-8 and 22-5 respectively in the fourth round.
In the final round, the men defeated Columbia 14-13 and the Red Storm women won 15-12. Both men and women sabre teams had strong finishes, winning the round 7-2.
