Frederick Jumps To NCAA Provisional Height At Great Dane Invite

QUEENS, N.Y. - St. John's sophomore Priscilla Frederick jumped to her first NCAA provisional qualifier of the season with her winning high jump height of 1.78 meters (5 feet, 10 inches) at the Great Dane Invitational hosted by University of Albany at the 168th Street Armory on Friday. The Sicklerville, N.J., native's height was a career-best effort in the indoor event.
As a team, Red Storm track & field finished sixth out of 30 teams with 46 points.
Senior Venisa Clarke-Lee was runner up in the same event with a season-best height of 1.70 meters (5 feet, 7 inches), scoring eight points for the Red Storm and qualifying her for the ECAC Championships in March.
Clarke-Lee's fellow classmates Paula Rennalls and Phobay Kutu-Akoi also hit ECAC qualifying times in the 200-meter dash for the second straight week. Rennall's season-best time of 24.75 seconds, placed her third in the event, while Kutu-Akoi finished eighth with a time of 25.04 seconds.
The Red Storm 4x400-meter relay squad of Asia Nettles, Kim Piard, Rennalls and Julia Smith also raced to an ECAC qualifier as they earned five points for St. John's with a fourth place time 3:52.60. The `B' squad of Rene Cousins, Asia Davy, Kutu-Akoi and Lauren Wynter placed 13th in the event with a time of 4:01.31.
Red Storm senior co-captain Tyneka Greene also won her event, the 800-meter run, with a BIG EAST qualifying time of 2:15.76, which also earned 10 points to the team score. Sophomore Sarah Sudbury finished 11th in the event (2:21.06) and senior Rakibat Abiola placed 26th (2:30.43).
Individually, Piard also qualified for February's BIG EAST Conference Championships with a ninth place time of 57.73 seconds in the 400-meter dash. Smith, Nettles and Wynter also competed in the event. Smith, a freshman, finished 12th with a time of 58.79 seconds, Nettles, a junior, crossed the tape in 58.99 seconds for 14th place and Wynter, a sophomore, finished 17th with a time of 59.30 seconds.
Sophomore Bintou Dibba finished fourth in the long jump with a season-best and BIG EAST qualifying distance of 5.64 meters (18 feet, 6 inches). Junior Fayanne Francis and Frederick also competed in the long jump. Francis finished 20th with a distance of 5.22 meters (17 feet, 1.50 inches), while Frederick placed 28th with a jump of 4.83 meters (15 feet, 10.25 meters).
Frederick also competed in the 55-meter hurdles. The sophomore finished 21st with a time of 8.76 seconds. Senior Marie Griffiths, Francis and Dibba also competed in the short sprints with an appearance in the 55-meter dash. The senior finished 34th, crossing the tape at 7.63 seconds. Francis was close behind with a 38th place finish of 7.69 seconds. Dibba placed 49th at 7.80 seconds.
In the 500-meter dash, Davy placed 17th (1:21.43) with Cousins at her heels with a 19th place time of 1:21.71.
In the longer distances, freshman Aryon Trujillo finished 21st in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 10:56.53.
In the field events, freshman Chanel King hit her season-best distance in the weight throw with an eighth-place throw of 14.48 meters (47 feet, 6.25 inches). King also threw in the shot put competition with a 21st place distance of 11.68 meters (38 feet, 4 inches).
