Gray Team Takes Game Three, 6-2, To Win IWS

QUEENS, N.Y. - The gray team won the 2009 Red-Gray Intrasquad World Series after a 6-2 win in game three. Miguel Valcarcel started for the gray team and tossed 4.0 innings of no-hit ball to earn player of the game honors. Matt Wessinger was 1-for-1 with a double and three runs scored to cap the series in which he was named the most outstanding player.
"I thought that we improved in each game throughout the series," said head coach Ed Blankmeyer. "Our new guys showed a lot of promise and I expect us to be a very solid squad this year."
The gray team took an early lead with a three-run first inning. After a Scott Ferrara single, an error, a hit batsman and another error put two runs on the board. A Kevin Needham sacrifice fly then gave the gray team a 3-0 lead.
The gray team added a run in the third. After Wessinger led off with a double, Jeremy Baltz followed with an RBI single to give the gray squad a 4-0 advantage.
The red team cut into the lead with a two-run fifth inning. Jason Chesterman got things started with the first of four-straight, one-out singles. After a Pat Talbut single, Jimmy Brennan and Sean O'Hare each followed with RBI singles.
A two-run double by Needham in the bottom of the fifth gave the gray team a 6-2 lead.
Needham also pitched 2.0 scoreless innings for the gray team. The freshman walked one and allowed no hits.
Notes: The gray team was +9 in the game in the IWS points system, while the red team was -9 ... the final count in the IWS point system had the gray team at +20 and the red team at +2.
