QUEENS, N.Y. - The St. John's baseball recruiting class has been recognized by Baseball America in the publication's annual recruiting rankings. The Red Storm's 14-man class was classified as a sleeper; a class that is above-average relative to a normal recruiting class at their school, in their conference or in their region.
"We are very excited about this year's recruiting class," said head coach Ed Blankmeyer. "We brought in some fine student-athletes and talented ball players that we believe will have an impact on the program."
The recruiting class is highlighted by four players that were selected in the 2009 MLB Draft. Matt Carasiti was picked by the Texas Rangers in the 36th round (1,084 overall), while Kyle Hansen went in the 40th round (1,216 overall) to the Milwaukee Brewers. Jimmy Brennan was drafted by the Detroit Tigers in the 45th round (1,350 overall) and Jeremy Baltz went to the New York Yankees in the 45th round (1,365 overall).
From the Baseball America article: "St. John's landed the top class in the Northeast, led by hulking righty Kyle Hansen, the younger brother of former Red Storm All-American Craig Hansen. The 6-foot-7 Hansen has reached 94 mph and flashed an average slider at times. Connecticut righty Matt Carasiti also has projection and current arm strength, with a fastball that has reached 92. Outfielder Jeremy Baltz has above-average raw power from the right side."
The 14-man recruiting class features 10 players from the Tri-State Area. Baltz, Brennan, Hansen, Cameron Black, Anthony Cervone, Sean Hagan, John Schilt and Pat Talbut hail from New York, while Kevin Needham and Sean O'Hare are from New Jersey, and Carasiti comes from Connecticut. Robert Case (Florida), Josh Daniel (Colorado) and Kevin Grove (California) round out the class.
