QUEENS, N.Y. - A pair of St. John's baseball alums have been added to their respective squad's 40-man MLB rosters. Rob Delaney is on the 40-man roster for the Minnesota Twins, while Anthony Varvaro has been added to the roster for the Seattle Mariners.
"Rob and Anthony had tremendous careers at St. John's and we are very proud of them," said head coach Ed Blankmeyer. "They have worked very hard in the minors and this is a great and well-deserved accomplishment."
Delaney originally signed with Minnesota as a free agent in 2006. The reliever spent time in 2009 with both Class-AA New Britain and Class-AAA Rochester and combined to go 8-4 with a 3.44 ERA in 62 appearances. Delaney also had seven saves, while striking out 78 batters in 83.2 innings. The righty was the 2008 MLB.com Minor League Relief Pitcher of the Year, a 2008 Arizona Fall League Rising Star and the 2007 MLB.com Class-A Relief Pitcher of the Year.
Varvaro, a 12th round selection of the Mariners in the 2005 draft, spent time with Class-A High Desert and Class-AA West Tennessee in 2009, combining to go 4-3 with a 3.34 ERA, 12 saves, and 73 strikeouts in 62.0 innings. Varvaro also went 1-0 with a 4.05 ERA and two saves for the Peoria Javelinas in the Arizona Fall League. The righty started the AFL Championship game and tallied three strikeouts in 2.0 innings of work in a game the Javelinas went on to win, 5-4.
