STJ Men's Tennis Defeats UMBC, 6-1

FLUSHING MEADOWS, N.Y. - The St. John's men's tennis team defeated the UMBC Retrievers, 6-1, on Saturday at the USTA National Tennis Center. With the victory, the Red Storm improves to 2-0 on the spring season, while the Retrievers fall to 1-2.
In doubles, the St. John's tandems of senior Gustavo Loza /sophomore Pavel Cerny and freshman Milo Hauk /senior Derek Wallensteen were victorious at the No. 2 and 3 spots, respectively, earning the Red Storm the doubles point. Despite a loss at the No. 1 spot, St. John's took an early 1-0 advantage in the match.
At the No. 1 singles spot, sophomore Asaf Honig came back after dropping the first set to UMBC's Nick Savage-Pollock to grab a point for STJ with a 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 victory. Meanwhile, Hauk (6-2, 3-6, 6-3 at No. 2) and Loza (6-3, 6-3 at No. 4) each won their second matches of the day. It was junior Martin Kosut's 6-2, 6-2 straight-set sweep over the Retrievers' Logan Bricker at No. 6 that clinched the match for the Red Storm. Sophomore-transfer Stefan Nikolic remained perfect for the spring season in singles with a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 5.
The Red Storm returns to the court at the 2009 ECAC Championships, hosted by Harvard University from Friday, Feb. 13 until Monday, Feb. 16. Opponents will be determined prior to the start of the event.
