UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The St. John's fencing team finished in sixth place in the nation at the 2009 NCAA Championships, which concluded on Sunday. The Red Storm was one of just seven teams to finish with a score higher than 100, as the squad recorded 115 victories over four days of action. Host-school Penn State claimed the 2009 title after finishing with 195 combined wins.
After freshman Daryl Homer claimed a silver medal for the men's team in the sabre on Friday, sophomore Dagmara Wozniak took home the bronze with a third-place finish in the women's sabre event on Sunday.
Senior Dora Varga and junior Tanya Novakovska also finished in the top 10 in the nation in their respective events. Varga placed eighth in the women's sabre, while Novakovska finished eighth in women's epee competition.
As a team, St. John's has finished in sixth place or higher at the NCAA Championships in each season since and including the 1993 campaign, winning the national championship once (2001) and finishing in second place four times (1995, 2000, 2002 and 2007).
