STORRS, Conn. - The St. John's men's tennis team defeated BIG EAST rival Connecticut, 6-1, on Sunday at the UConn Tennis Courts. With the victory, the Red Storm improves to 8-7 overall (2-1 BIG EAST), while the Huskies fall to 6-4 (0-2 BIG EAST).
STJ took two of the three doubles matches to grab an early 1-0 lead in the match. The tandem of sophomore Martin Kosut and senior Gustavo Loza earned an 8-2 victory at the top-spot, while freshman Milo Hauk and junior Derek Wallensteen teamed up to win, 8-3, at the No. 3 spot.
Hauk and Wallensteen also won their singles matches at the No. 2 and 6 spots, respectively. Kosut was victorious for the second time in the match after he defeated UConn's Joey Michaels, 6-3, 6-1, at the No. 3 position. Sophomore-transfer Stefan Nikolic and senior Jordan Talbot contributed to the victory with wins: Nikolic outlasted the Huskies' Scott Warden in a third-set tiebreaker, 6-4, 5-7, (10-3), at the No. 4 spot, while Talbot picked up a 6-2, 6-1 straight-set victory at the No. 5 spot.
The Red Storm men's team returns to the court on Friday, March 27, when the squad travels to face the Stony Brook Seawolves. First serve in doubles competition is set for 3 p.m.
