Women's Tennis Falls To Cincinnati, 5-2

QUEENS, N.Y. - The St. John's women's tennis team lost to conference foe Cincinnati, 5-2, on Tuesday at the Alley Pond Tennis Center. With the loss, the Red Storm falls to 3-8 (2-2 BIG EAST), while UC improves to 10-6 (2-1 BIG EAST).
STJ won the doubles point with victories at the No. 1 and 2 spots. The duo of sophomore Jenny Yonkus and freshman Joanna Zwirbulis fought out a 9-8 (7-4) triumph over Ksenia Slynko and Valeriya Dandik at the top spot to clinch the early 1-0 lead for St. John's. Also contributing to the early lead for St. John's was the pair of senior Gabija Gaiunaite and freshman Knesia Mikhaylova, who claimed an 8-4 victory at No. 2.
A 6-2, 6-1 victory by Zwirbulis at the No. 5 spot over Cincinnati's Jessica Wise highlighted the Red Storm's singles play. At the No. 6 spot, Yonkus was edged by UC's Elizabeth Young, 6-5, 7-5, and the Bearcats went on to claim positions 1-4 to secure the victory.
St. John's returns to action on Wednesday, when the squad will play host to the UConn Huskies. The match will be the Red Storm's first at the Courts at St. John's this season. First serve of double competition is slated for 2 p.m.
