BETHESDA, Md. - Georgetown used a five-run fifth inning to help defeat the St. John's baseball team, 10-5, in the second game of a BIG EAST series. Jimmy Parque had a two-run home run and Greg Hopkins added two RBI to pace St. John's (13-8, 4-1). Starting pitcher Jimmy Saris allowed just three runs in 7.0 innings, while Sean Baumann was 3-for-3 with two home runs and two RBI to lead Georgetown (9-15, 2-3).
For the second time in the series Georgetown took the early lead thanks to a home run. With one out in the second, it was Sean Baumann that connected on a solo home run to right field to put the Hoyas up 1-0.
The score remained 1-0 Georgetown until the fifth when the Hoyas added five runs. Baumann led off the inning with a single through the right side and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. An error and a single by Rand Ravnaas loaded the bases before Andy Lentz singled home a pair of runs. Ravnaas then came home on an errant throw down to second. Tom Elliot followed with a two-out, two run home run and the Hoyas led 6-0 after five innings.
St. John's responded, however, with a two-run sixth inning. After Matt Wessinger singled with one out, Parque blasted a two-run home run over the fence in right center field to bring the Red Storm to within 6-2.
In the top of the seventh, Carlos Del Rosario and Danny Benedetti led off with back-to-back singles to set the table for St. John's. Gino Matias then singled to right field with one out, but Del Rosario was thrown out at the plate for the second out of the inning. Saris then induced a fly out to end the threat.
Georgetown added to its lead in the bottom of the seventh. After a two-out triple by Elliot, Erick Fernandez homered to left field and the Hoyas led 8-2.
Following a Wessinger single to lead off the eighth, the Hoyas pulled Saris. Wessinger was then erased on a Parque fielder's choice before Tim Morris doubled down the right field line and the Red Storm had runners on second and third. Hopkins followed with a two RBI single into left field as St. John's pulled to within 8-4.
The Hoyas responded in the bottom of frame as Baumann and pinch-hitter Dan Capeless connected for back-to-back home runs and Georgetown led 10-4.
Benedetti doubled to lead off the ninth and moved to third on a fly out. After Matias was plunked to give St. John's runners on the corners, the Hoyas went to the bullpen. Scott Ferrara was hit by a pitch to load the bases before a Wessinger RBI groundout made it 10-5. With runners on second and third, however, reliever Jack Bender tallied a strike out to end the game.
St. John's and Georgetown will travel to New York for the series finale on March 29. The game will be the first-ever contest played at Citi Field, the brand new home of the New York Mets.
