QUEENS, N.Y. - The St. John's baseball program hosted its 12th annual Bullpen Golf Outing at The Garden City Country Club in Garden City, N.Y. The event, with title sponsor Chartwells, raised more than $40,000 to benefit the Red Storm baseball program.
The course was at capacity with 124 golfers, while more than 140 people attended the banquet hosted by dinner sponsors Dick Chapdelaine and Anthony Bonomo.
"The Bullpen Golf Outing continues to grow and this was the best-attended outing since its inception," said head coach Ed Blankmeyer. "The event was very successful in both bringing the alumni together and raising needed funds for the program.
At the dinner banquet the "Coach Jack Kaiser Baseball Advocate Award" was presented to Anthony Bonomo. This award is the highest honor that the St. John's baseball program bestows upon an alumnus, friend, benefactor, parent, coach or fan. The individual possesses the same characteristics as Coach Kaiser: loyalty, dedication, hard work, and exceptional support of the baseball program.
A four-year member of the St. John's baseball team under head coach Joe Russo (1977-80), Bonomo was with the team as it compiled a 128-50 record, reached four NCAA Tournaments and made two trips to the College World Series. Bonomo attended St. John's School of Law after completing his undergraduate degree and soon created several successful companies, including Physician's Reciprocal Insurers, the second largest medical malpractice writer in New York State and one of the nation's leaders. A constant supporter of his alma mater, Bonomo's strengths lie in his continued support for his teammates and his loyalty to the baseball program.
The outing was also sponsored by the following corporate partners: The Coca-Cola Bottling Co. of New York, the Tri-State Lincoln Mercury Dealers Association and StubHub!
The St. John's baseball team finished 30-22 (16-11) in 2009 and reached the BIG EAST Tournament for the sixth-consecutive season. A total of five players earned All-BIG EAST honors, while juniors Brian Kemp and Tim Morris were both drafted in the 2009 MLB Draft. The squad was paced by a prolific offense that set new school-records in batting average (.349), runs scored (473), RBI (440) and doubles (149). The Red Storm also played in front of 22,397 fans in the first-ever game at Citi Field, the new home of the New York Mets.
