CINCINNATI - Da'Shena Stevens scored 15 points, Kelly McManmon added 14 and Sky Lindsay chipped in 11 for St. John's, but Cincinnati's offense was strong throughout the game and came away with the 70-60 win on Sunday afternoon at Fifth Third Arena.
The story of the day for the Red Storm was McManmon breaking STJ's all-time 3-point record. She only needed two to surpass Monique McLean's record of 172, and connected on 4-of-6 from long range to put the new record at 175. The senior finished the game 5-of-8 from the field and nine of her 14 points came in the second half.
With 15 points in the game, Stevens recorded her 14th double-digit scoring performance of the season. The sophomore was 6-of-11 from the field, 1-of-2 from long distance and 2-of-4 from the charity stripe. She also tied Joy McCorvey for the team high with eight rebounds, and added two assists and one steal.
Lindsay scored nine second-half points to finish with 11 en route to her eighth double-digit scoring effort of the year. She was perfect from the free-throw line, going 3-of-3, and grabbed five rebounds and added one assist in 29 minutes of play.
After Cincinnati (8-7, 1-2 BIG EAST) went ahead 10-6 to open the game, Stevens drained a jumper to spark a 7-2 run that gave the Red Storm a 13-12 lead at the 11:06 mark. The Bearcats quickly got the momentum back in their favor, using a 22-7 run to take a 14-point advantage, 34-20, at 2:55. STJ managed to cut the deficit down to 10 at the break by closing out the half on a 6-2 run, 36-26.
St. John's (13-3, 1-2 BIG EAST) got its offense into motion to start the second frame and cut the Bearcats' lead in half, 40-35. McManmon capped the run with her record-breaking trey at the 16:23 mark. The game stayed close until the Red Storm came within two points of tying the score when McCorvey converted a layup on a fast break, 51-49, at 4:11. UC quickly drained a trey, but McManmon matched the effort to keep STJ within two.
After the Bearcats scored five-straight points to take a seven-point lead, 62-55, with 1:56 remaining, STJ came within four points of knotting the score twice, but UC pulled away each time.
The Red Storm will return home on Tuesday and host Seton Hall at 7 p.m. The game will be televised live on CBS College Sports.
