VIDEO: Beirne Recaps Winning The Individual Title And Team's Fall Success
HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla. - Fifth-year senior captain Evan Beirne carded final-round 68 on Sunday to power his way to the individual title in the Mission Inn Intercollegiate. The Red Storm took third and Johnson & Wales took the team title.
Beirne, who finished with a 71-71-68-210 (-6), entered the final round in third place and three strokes back of Johnson & Wales' Chris Hawley. Beirne's 4-under 68 was the difference as he edged Hawley and Stetson's Sam Ryder for the individual title by three strokes. He finished with two eagles and nine birdies and did his best work on the par 5s with a 4.25 (-9) average. The win marks Beirne's second individual title with St. John's and the first for any Red Storm golfer since he and Bradley tied for first in the 2008 Princeton Invitational. Beirne has now finished in the top five in his last four tournaments.
"It feels good," Beirne said. "I've played well and consistently for most of the fall with two seconds and a fifth, so I've been knocking on the door. Today, I got let in."
After shooting a 13-over 301 in the final round, the Red Storm finished third at 25-over 889, eight strokes behind tournament winner Johnson & Wales (881). Florida Atlantic was second with an 18-over 882.
St. John's freshman Ryan McCormick tied for 10th at 77-71-75-223 (+7). He totaled a team-high 12 birdies and enjoyed a 4.67 (-4) scoring average on par 5s. McCormick now has two top-10 showings on the season. He tied for ninth in the Hartford Hawk Invitational.
Senior Mark Costanza and sophomore Peter Ballo tied for 24th. Costanza carded a 76-73-81-230 (+14) and tallied two eagles and nine birdies. Ballo shot 75-75-81-230 (+14) and totaled nine birdies.
Sophomore Pat Wilson tied for 33rd after shooting 78-77-77-232 (+16). Sophomore Jeremy Quinn, competing as an individual, finished in a tie for 53rd after carding an 80-85-78-243 (+27).
St. John's finishes its fall slate with two team victories (wins in the Hartford Hawk Invitational and the The MacDonald Cup) and one individual title. The Red Storm returns to action in the spring.
