NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Four St. John's men's golfers finished in the top 10 on Sunday as the Red Storm won The MacDonald Cup for its second-straight tournament title of the year. The Red Storm fired 5-over 285 to finish at 5-over 565 and earn a 15-stroke victory at The Course at Yale.
"It started out as a tough day. It was really cold and windy in the beginning and I think everybody got off to kind of a slow start," fifth-year senior captain Evan Beirne said. "Then we just held it together in the middle and the end of our rounds to get the win."
Beirne tied for second place after shooting 68-70--138 (-2), two strokes back of the individual winner, Central Connecticut State Kevin Josephson. Beirne also tied for second in St. John's victory in the Hartford Hawk Invitational last week.
Senior Mark Costanza posted his best finish of his St. John's career, taking fourth place after carding a 68-71--139 (-1). Jeremy Quinn, competing as an individual, also had the best finish of his collegiate career, tying for fifth at 64-74--140 (E). The sophomore's 6-under 64 in the first round was the best round of his career and gave him the lead heading into Sunday's play.
Sophomore Peter Ballo tied for seventh after shooting 68-74--142 (+2). The seventh-place showing was Ballo's best finish of the season and the second-best performance of his career.
Sophomore Pat Wilson enjoyed a six-stroke improvement in the final round, finishing at 76-70--146 (+6) to tie for 18th. Freshman Ryan McCormick shot 76-76--152 (+12) and tied for 46th.
"Getting everybody to play well together, that's how you win these things," Beirne said. "Getting everybody in the top 20, we've been fortunate enough to do it two weeks in a row. We're going to try to do it the rest of the fall."
Tournament host Yale finished second at 20-over 580 and Binghamton rounded out the top three at 22-over 582.
The Red Storm will next head down to Plymouth Meeting, Pa., to compete in the Big 5 Championship at Plymouth Country Club. At last year's Big 5 Championship, St. John's finished 10th. Mike Ballo Jr. took second and Beirne finished sixth in the Temple-hosted event.
"There is a bright future for this team," Beirne said. "Hopefully it means some big finishes in the spring."
