Updating The Players In The Pros: 2010 Edition

QUEENS, N.Y. - Highlighted by the Major League debuts of Rob Delaney and Anthony Varvaro, alumni of the St. John's baseball program had another successful season in the professional ranks.
Scott Barnes spent his third professional season with the Double-A Akron Aeros of the Eastern League. The lefty was 6-11 with a 5.22 ERA in 26 starts for the Aeros. In 138.0 innings of work, Barnes racked up 127 strikeouts and held the opposition to a .241 average. Following the season, Barnes was named to the roster of the Peoria Javelinas of the Arizona Fall League.
George Brown spent the season with Class-A Advanced Palm Beach Cardinals of the Florida State League. The lefty was limited to two late season appearances after missing most of the season due to injury. Brown had two strikeouts in 1.1 innings of work.
A 12th round draft pick of the New York Yankees, Daniel Burawa spent his rookie season with the Staten Island Yankees of the Class-A Short Season New York-Penn League. The righty was 0-0 with a 7.71 ERA in six appearances and racked up 10 strikeouts in 7.0 innings of work.
Selected by the Houston Astros in the 34th round, Ryan Cole opened his rookie season with Greeneville Astros of the Rookie Appalachian League. The reliever was 3-3 with two saves and a 2.83 ERA in 22 appearances for Greeneville. The righty also totaled 28 strikeouts and issued just eight walks in 35.0 innings, while holding the opposition to a .222 average. Cole was then promoted to the TriCity ValleyCats of the Class-A Short Season New York-Penn League. The ValleyCats went on win the best-of-three NYPL Championship Series against the Brooklyn Cyclones.
Delaney spent the season with the Triple-A Rochester Red Wings before earning a call-up to the Minnesota Twins. The righty made his MLB debut on Sept. 4, allowing one run in 1.0 inning of work against the Texas Rangers in his lone appearance. In 61 appearances for the Red Wings, the reliever was 7-9 with a 4.73 ERA and four saves. Delaney racked up 92 strikeouts in 80.0 innings of work, while issuing just 23 walks and limiting the opposition to a .264 average.
Craig Hansen began the 2010 season with the Class-A Advanced Bradenton Marauders of the Florida State League. The reliever was 1-3 with a 3.86 ERA and 15 strikeouts in 14.0 innings of work before being promoted to the Double-A Altoona Curve of the Eastern League. Hansen made one appearance with the Curve, tossing 2.0 scoreless innings. Altoona went on to win the Eastern League Championship, defeating the Trenton Thunder in the best-of-five series.
Drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers in the 24th round, Greg Hopkins spent the season in the Rookie Pioneer League with the Helena Brewers. The third baseman batted .285 with 17 doubles, six home runs and 48 RBI in 67 games. Hopkins also scored 44 runs and posted a .412 slugging percentage. Helena swept the Ogden Raptors in a best-of-three series to win the Pioneer League Finals.
An All-Star in 2009 as a rookie with the Tri-City ValleyCats of the Class-A Short Season New York-Penn League, Brian Kemp spent 2010 with the Lexington Legends of the Class-A South Atlantic League. The outfielder batted .226 with eight doubles and 14 RBI in 61 games, and was 8-of-10 in stolen base attempts.
A 23rd round draft pick of the Colorado Rockies, Bruce Kern spent his rookie campaign with the Casper Ghosts of the Rookie Pioneer League. The righty was 0-3 with one save and a 4.68 ERA in 14 appearances, including four starts. Kern tallied 24 strikeouts and issued just nine walks in 32.2 innings. In his 10 relief appearances Kern posted a 4.12 ERA and had 13 strikeouts in 19.2 innings.
After spending the 2009 season with the Pulaski Mariners of the Rookie Appalachian League, Tim Morris spent his second professional season with the Clinton LumberKings of the Class-A Midwest League. Morris batted .250 with 14 doubles, three triples, five home runs and 46 RBI in 83 games. The LumberKings reached the Midwest League Championship Series, but fell to the Lake County Captains in the best-of-five series.
Varvaro opened the season with the Double-A West Tenn Diamond Jaxx before being promoted to the Triple-A Tacoma Rainiers and then earning a call-up to the Seattle Mariners. The righty made his Major League debut on Sept. 24, tallying two strikeouts in 1.0 scoreless inning against the Tampa Bay Rays. Varvaro made four appearances for the Mariners, going 0-1 with an 11.25 ERA and five strikeouts in 4.0 innings of work. In 19 appearances for Tacoma, the reliever was 0-0 with a 5.26 ERA and 26 strikeouts in 25.2 innings of work. The Rainiers went on to defeat the Memphis Redbirds in a best-of-five series to win the Pacific Coast League championship. Varvaro was 1-3 with a 3.20 ERA in 31 appearances for the Diamond Jaxx. The righty had 46 strikeouts in 39.1 innings, held the opposition to a .194 batting average and was named a Southern League All-Star for the second-straight season.
