QUEENS, N.Y. - St. John's head coach Yury Gelman and internationally ranked Red Storm fencers Dagmara Wozniak and Daryl Homer are set to represent St. John's at the 2010 Fencing World Championships, which begin Thursday in Paris.
Wozniak, ranked 11th in the world, finished in the top-64 at last year's event, before she earned All-America honors at the NCAA Championships with a third-place finish. The senior has two top-3 finishes in international competition so far this year.
Homer, who is the reigning NCAA Champion in the men's sabre, will look to improve upon his 25th-place finish at last year's World Championships, his first ever appearance at the event. The junior is currently ranked 33rd in the world and has finished eighth in his last two appearances in international competition.
Wozniak and Homer will have a familiar face at the World Championships, as their Red Storm coach is also the leader of the U.S. men's sabre squad. Gelman is in his 16th season as head coach of the St. John's fencing team. Under Gelman's leadership, St. John's has not finished lower than sixth place in the nation and has one national championship (2001) and five second-place finishes at the NCAA Championships (1995, 2000, 2002, 2007, 2010). Gelman has also represented the United States as a coach for the U.S. Fencing Team during the Olympic Games in Beijing, Athens, and Sydney.
