Homer Finishes In Top-16 At World Championships

QUEENS, N.Y. - St. John's junior Daryl Homer led all U.S. men's saberists with a top-16 finish at the 2010 Fencing World Championships in Paris.
In his first bout at the championships, Homer defeated 47th-ranked Bolade Apithy of France, 15-14. In his second match, the junior beat another hometown foe in similar fashion. Homer out-touched No. 15 Nicolas Lopez, 15-14. Homer was eliminated in the Round of 16, by No. 2 Nicolas Limbach of Germany, 15-5. The reigning NCAA Champion entered the event ranked 33rd in the world.
On the women's side, Dagmara Wozniak, who entered the event ranked 13th, won her first match of the day against Hungary's Anna Varhelyi, 15-12. She was then upset by No. 20 Olena Khomrova of the Ukraine, 15-8, in the Round of 32.
The St. John's fencing team begins its 2010-11 season at the Brandeis Invitational on Dec. 5. The Red Storm finished second at the NCAA Championships last season. St. John's has not finished lower than sixth place in the nation since 1993. As a team, STJ has one national championship (2001) and five second-place finishes (1995, 2000, 2002, 2007, 2010).
