PITTSBURGH - St. John's fell behind 9-0 in the fourth inning and could not mount a comeback in a 13-1 defeat at Pitt. Jimmy Parque and Robert Case had two hits apiece, while Jeremy Baltz had a solo home run to pace St. John's (12-8, 0-2). Kyle Hansen (2-1) took the loss, allowing five runs in 3.0 innings of work. David Chester had three RBI, while John Schultz and Travis Whitmore had two RBI each for Pitt (17-4, 2-0). Matt Iannazzo (4-0) allowed just one run and had six strikeouts in 7.0 innings for the Panthers.
Pitt took a 3-0 lead in the second inning. Whitmore singled off of Hansen's foot to open the frame before a walk to Sean Toole gave the Panthers runners on first and second with no outs. Philip Konieczny then laid down a sacrifice bunt, but reached first as Hansen took the out at second. After Whitmore came home on a balk to put Pitt on the board, Zach Duggan lined an RBI double into right field. Shultz grounded an RBI single through the left side before Hansen induced a 6-4-3 double play to end the frame.
After Sean O'Hare was stranded on second following a one-out double in the first, Case was left on second after a lead off double in the fourth.
Chester led off the bottom of the third with a solo home run as Pitt took a 4-0 lead.
The Panthers used six hits to plate five runs in the fourth. A lead off single by Danny Lopez in the fourth chased Hansen from the game and reliever Sean Hagan came in from the bullpen. After Schultz greeted Hagan with an RBI double off the wall in left field, Joe Leonard singled and Chester walked to load the bases with no outs. A wild pitch brought in one run before a two-run single by Whitmore and an RBI single by Konieczny gave Pitt a 9-0 lead. St. John's took the force out at home for the first out before Hagan got a pop up and grounder to end the inning.
St. John's got on the board with one run in the seventh. Baltz led off the inning with a solo home run to left center. Joe Panik was then plunked before Case blooped a one-out single into center field. Iannazzo, though, ended the inning by inducing a 5-4-3 double play.
Pitt added a run in the seventh and three more in the eighth to go up 13-1.
St. John's concludes its series against Pitt at 11 a.m. on March 28. Due to expected inclement weather, the game time was moved up one hour from its original start time.
