QUEENS, N.Y. - Daryl Homer earned a spot on the United States Senior National Team after he placed first in the men's sabre at the North American Cup this week in Virginia Beach, Va.
He was followed in the standings by teammate Sean Buckley, who tied for third to put himself in position to also make the senior squad.
"Daryl and Sean both fenced very well," Red Storm head coach Yury Gelman said. "After winning the NCAA championship, it was a performance we expected from Daryl, but Sean continues to show improvement and made great strides in Virginia Beach."
Adam Watson, Nicholas Vomero and Tanya Novakovska also competed at the event. In the men's epee, Watson finished sixth, while Vomero placed 38th. Novakovska earned a sixth-place finish in the women's epee.
The Red Storm fencing team finished second at the NCAA Championships last month in Boston, where Homer (sabre) and Marat Israelian (epee) each won individual NCAA titles.
St. John's has not finished lower than sixth place in the nation since 1993. As a team, STJ has one national championship (2001) and five second-place finishes at the NCAA Championships (1995, 2000, 2002, 2007, 2010).
