QUEENS, N.Y. - The St. John's track & field team hosted its annual Monday Meeting last night at DaSilva Memorial Track. The Red Storm captured first place wins in every event except two and several runners produced season-best performances.
The annual meet marked the only time that St. John's will compete at DaSilva Memorial Track, and also served as Senior Day for the team's four seniors, Asia Nettles, Sarah Fry, Asia Davy and Fayanne Francis.
"It is always a little bittersweet to see our seniors move on," said head coach Jim Hurt. "They've done a great job the last four years and it's neat to see them grow into fine young women. We are very confident that they are going to go forward and do a great job in their lives, but will always be a part of the St. John's family."
St. John's competed in the javelin throw for the first time this season as Diana DeJesus, competing unattached, won the event with a throw of 31.60 meters. Junior Priscilla Frederick and sophomore Chanel King finished second and third respectively.
King went on to win first place in the shot put with a season-best throw of 13.08 meters.
Frederick competed in four other events, winning first place in the high jump, long jump, and 200-meters, while placing third in the shot put. Frederick continues to rank in the top five in the country with her school-record high jump of 1.83 meters.
The St. John's 4x100-meter relay team competed alongside men's teams from Queensborough, St. Thomas Aquinas and Lehman College, defeating Lehman with a time 48.87 seconds. The foursome was made up of junior Vanessa Thompson, freshman Rikka Lovely, senior Asia Nettles and junior Rene Cousins.
Lovely captured first place in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.13 seconds. Cousins finished second in 12.39, followed by freshman Molly Ellis and Thompson. Junior Kim Piard and senior Asia Davy ran in the second heat of the event, finishing first and second by a considerable margin.
Junior Lauren Wynter ran as the only Red Storm competitor in the 400-meter dash, finishing first with a time of 59.41 seconds.
Junior Sarah Sudbury and sophomore Nicole Cocozza paced St. John's in the distance events as Sudbury won the 800-meter dash (2:25.48) while Cocozza finished first in the 1500-meter race (4:57.19), clocking in with her best time in her career.
Pamela Petruski finished in third place in the 1500-meters followed by Aryon Trujillo, racing unattached, and Katrina Schaefer. Trujillo and Schaefer also ran in the 800-meter race.
Freshman Stephanie Barnes and senior Fayanne Francis finished second and third, respectively, behind Frederick in the long jump event.
The Red Storm will travel to Miami this weekend before competing at the Metropolitan Championships on April 17.
