QUEENS, N.Y. - Red Storm fencer Daryl Homer was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District men's at-large team as announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) on Thursday.
"I take pride in my versatility and the fact that I can balance a rigorous fencing schedule with my demanding academic requirements," Homer said. "This award is the culmination of a lot of hard work."
Homer, a communications major with a concentration in advertising and marketing, earned second-team honors for his achievements in the classroom and on the strip. The Bronx, N.Y., native was an NCAA Champion and garnered All-America honors in the men's sabre, while maintaining a 3.42 GPA.
"Daryl works very hard in every aspect of his life," St. John's fencing coach Yury Gelman said. "His work ethic is what will make him successful as he moves on in life."
Homer placed first at the North American Cup in April, securing a spot on the United States Senior National Team. The rising junior is currently ranked 13th in the world in the junior division and placed seventh at the 2010 Junior World Championships.
