QUEENS, N.Y. - St. John's shortstop Joe Panik won the Daniel J. Silva Sportsmanship Award, as announced by the Cape Cod League. Panik, who spent the summer playing for the East Division champion Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox, also earned All-League honors.
In 42 regular season games, the shortstop batted .276 with eight doubles, two home runs and 19 RBI. Panik also drew a team-best 20 walks, led the team with a .386 on-base percentage and was a perfect 11-for-11 in stolen bases. A league all-star, Panik started and batted clean up in the All-Star game played at Fenway Park and went 1-for-2 in the contest.
Panik batted .393 with one double, one home run and three RBI in seven playoff games as the Red Sox advanced to the Cape Cod League championship series. The Red Sox, however, fell to the Cotuit Kettleers in the best-of-three series.
"He's a great kid who had a great season," said Red Sox manager Scott Pickler. "He plays with an even temper and nothing bothers him. You can't tell if he went 0-for-4 or 4-for-4, and that's why he won the award."
The winner of the award is selected by the league's umpires. Previous winners of the award include current major leaguers Matt LaPorta and Carlos Pena.
