DePaul Tops St. John's, 7-0, In Series Finale

CHICAGO - The St. John's softball team fell to DePaul, 7-0, on Sunday in the final game of its three-game series against the Blue Demons at Cacciatore Stadium.
DePaul (20-10, 5-1 BIG EAST) took a 1-0 lead on St. John's (13-21, 0-4 BIG EAST) when Samantha Dodd hit a solo home run to left off Red Storm starter Linzee Sumrall's first pitch of the second inning. Three batters later, Alex Morocco singled to right field to bring in Allie Braden from second base. The Blue Demons' lead grew to 3-0 when Kirsten Verdun, DPU's starting pitcher, singled up the middle to plate Morocco from third base.
Katelyn Braget led off the third with a solo homer to right to push DePaul's lead to 4-0. Ashley Beza then entered the game in relief of Sumrall. With one out and a runners on second and third, Braden hit into an RBI groundout to first as Lindsey Dean crossed the plate for the Blue Demon's fifth run.
The Red Storm had two runners in scoring position in the fourth, but Verdun escaped the inning unscathed. Fachon Jones led off with a single to short. Chrissy Montez reached on a fielder's choice with Jones out at second. After Montez advanced to second on a wild pitch, Kristi Cady hit a bloop single to left field and advanced on the throw with Montez moving up to third. Verdun induced a foulout to left and a swinging strikeout to get out of the inning.
With one out in the bottom of the fourth, Braget hit an RBI double to center field to score Lynsey Ciezki from second and give DePaul a 6-0 lead.
Verdun led off the bottom of the sixth with a solo home run to left center off a 1-1 pitch from Beza. After Megan Coronado hit a pinch-hit double, Myriah Rodgers, who started the game as the designated player and opened the sixth at first base, entered the circle to relieve Beza. Rodgers closed out the sixth with two swinging strikeouts and a 5-3 groundout.
Curry went 2-of-3 with one double. Cady and Jones each recorded one hit in the game.
Sumrall (2-7) took the loss after allowing five earned runs over two innings. Beza allowed one earned run over three relief frames. Rodgers pitched a scoreless sixth with two strikeouts.
Verdun improved to 12-3 after tossing five shutout innings. Bree Brown tossed two scoreless relief innings.
St. John's next heads to South Orange, N.J., for a doubleheader against Seton Hall on April 6. The Red Storm returns to Queens for a three-game series against Providence from April 9-10.
