FLUSHING MEADOWS, N.Y.- Freshman Amber Washington's title in the "G" singles flight and senior Ksenia Mikhaylova's finals appearance in the "I" singles bracket propelled the Red Storm at this year's USTA Women's College Invitational this past weekend.
Washington topped Columbia's Amy Li in the finals, 6-4, 6-3, to win her second title in the Red and White after winning the consolation championship at the Cissie Leary Invitational three weeks ago. The St. Paul, Minn. native defeated both Tiana Takenaga of Columbia in the quarterfinals and Jana Luste of NJIT in the semifinals in three sets that set the table for her championship.
Mikhaylova's run to the finals included wins over Seton Hall's Anna Guryanova, 7-5, 6-3, LIU-Brooklyn's Brittany Thompson, 6-0, 6-2, and Farleigh Dickinson's Manu Leme, 6-2, 6-4.
In other singles action, sophomore Gvantsa Robakidze picked up two victories over Satreethai Sasinin of Rutgers in three sets and Margaret Iliev of Army, 6-3, 6-2.
The Red Storm will wrap up their 2012 fall season in West Point, N.Y. for the USTA/ITA Northeast Regionals that run from Oct. 19-21.
