St. John's Track & Field Announces 2012-13 Schedule

St. John's head track & field coach Jim Hurt has released the schedule for the 2012-13 indoor and outdoor seasons, which includes 29 possible meets across 14 states.
"We are very excited about our indoor and outdoor schedule as it offers our team the opportunity to compete at the best competitions and venues around the country," said Hurt. "We go coast-to-coast to provide our student-athletes the chance to develop their skills at the highest level. The Meyo Invite at the University of Notre Dame, the New Balance Invite at the New York City Armory, the BIG EAST Championship at the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio and the ECACs in Boston will test our team against the country's best during the indoor season. A grueling outdoor season that features meets in Tampa, Houston, Raleigh and many other top sites have us looking forward to a fantastic season ahead."
The indoor track & field season begins with a slate of New York based meets before the holiday break. The throwers get in some early season work at the Manhattan College Multi on Saturday, Dec. 1. Then on Thursday, Dec. 6, St. John's track & field will hold the third annual Bill Ward Invitational at St. Anthony's H.S. in Huntington, N.Y. A portion of the squad will also compete at the Fordham Lid-Lifter the following day, Friday, Dec. 7.
When St. John's track & field returns from the winter recess, it will travel to the Princeton Quad meet on Friday, Jan. 12. The next week, on Friday, Jan. 18, the Red Storm will participate in the Great Dane Classic at the infamous New York City Armory.
The Red Storm will take part in its first championship meet of the season with the Metropolitan Championship held between Manhattan College and the New York City Armory from Jan. 24-25. St. John's finished second overall at last year's indoor Metropolitan Championship and returns individual champions Rikka Lovely (60 and 200-meters), Claire Mooney (500-meters) and Natasha Amazan (shot put).
The Red Storm will then prepare for a split weekend as part of the squad will compete at the New Balance Invite at the New York City Armory and a larger portion of the squad will travel to the Meyo Invite at the University of Notre Dame from Feb. 1-2. The St. John's track & field team will head to the the St. Valentine's Invite at the Boston University Armory on Saturday, Feb. 9.
Championship season kicks off in full force from Feb. 16-17 with the BIG EAST Championships which will be held at the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio for the first time. The SPIRE Institute is a 240,000-square-foot clear-span indoor track & field complex that has been one of the top venues in the sport since it opened in 2010. St. John's has finished 10th at the last two BIG EAST Indoor Track & Field Championships.
The USA Championships will be held in Albuquerque, N.M. on Saturday-Sunday, Feb. 23-24 for those Red Storm athletes that qualify. The next weekend marks the ECAC Indoor Championships at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston, Mass. on March 2-3. The Red Storm is coming off an eighth-place finish at last year's ECAC competition, its best finish since 2006. The NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships will take place on March 8-9 at the University of Arkansas where the top athletes in the country will compete for the sport's highest honors.
The Red Storm will then travel south to open the outdoor track & field season. St. John's will compete in the South Florida Invite on Saturday, March 16. The following weekend the sprinters will compete at the Victor Lopez Invite in Houston, Texas on Saturday, March 23 while the throwers will attend the Kent Taylor Hill Invitational at Raleigh, N.C.
The Red Storm will be back at home for its annual STJ Monday Meeting on April 1 at DaSilva Memorial Track. The STJ Monday Meeting is St. John's lone meet on campus during the season and gives fans a chance to see the track & field team in action. Over the weekend, St. John's will compete at the Sam Howell Invite at Princeton University on Saturday, April 6.
The outdoor Metropolitan Championships will take place at Ramapo College in Mahwah, N.J. from April 12-13. Matching last season's indoor performance, the Red Storm also finished second at the 2012 outdoor Metropolitan Championships. In a push toward qualification for postseason championships, members of the Red Storm will head to the Larry Ellis Invitational on Saturday, April 20 for the team's second meet at Princeton University. The Red Storm also hopes to send participants to the prestigious Mount Sac Relays in Walnut, Calif. that same weekend as Priscilla Frederick and alums Phobay Kutu-Akoi and Grace Zollman competed at the meet last year.
St. John's track & field will then make its annual trip to the historic Penn Relays at Franklin Field in Philadelphia, Pa. from Thursday, April 25 to Saturday, April 27. A number of Red Storm student-athletes will also compete at the Yale Invite that Sunday, April 28 in the last possible qualifying meet before the BIG EAST Championships.
The outdoor BIG EAST Championships, one of the nation's premier track & field events, will be held at Rutgers University from May 3-5. The Red Storm remains in New Jersey as the ECAC Championships brings St. John's track & field back to Princeton University for a third time from May 10-12. St. John's took 21st-place at last year's outdoor competition as every competitor that qualified took home All-East Honors.
The NCAA Regional Championships will take place at NC A&T in Greensboro, N.C. from May 23-25 with the top qualifiers advancing to the NCAA Championships at the University of Oregon in Eugene, Ore. from June 5-8. Members of the Red Storm also have the opportunity to compete in the USATF Junior Nationals at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa from June 21-22.
