New Haven, Conn. -
St. John's (1-1, 0-0) is now 0-7 all-time against Yale and has dropped contests the past two seasons to their Ivy League opponent. The Red Storm was outshot 45-21 for the game, as chances were hard to come by throughout.
Harry Kutner led the St. John's attack with three goals, all coming in the third quarter, giving the senior five for the season. Sophomore Kevin Cernuto added two goals himself to bring his tally to five for the 2012 campaign as well. Joe Addona paced the STJ defense with four groundballs and a caused turnover on the afternoon.
Yale's offense showed no signs of any opening season rust as the Bulldogs were deadly accurate on outside shots. The Elis finished 22nd in the nation in shooting percentage for 2011 at 28.9 percent, but posted an impressive 42.2 percent clip against the Red Storm.
The Bulldogs got the scoring started early with six goals to begin the day's proceedings. Last week's offensive standout Kieran McArdle got St. John's on the board off an assist from Ryan Fitzgerald to make the score 6-1. Brandon Mangan would score the second of his four goals for Yale minutes later to extend back to 7-1. Cernuto would get his first goal of the game with 1:44 left in the half, but Yale added another in the final minute of the first to head into the half up 8-2.
The Red Storm appeared to come out energized in the second half as Kutner found the net with an underhand snipe to make the score 8-3. A few minutes later, a disputed penalty call on Cernuto led to a two-minute advantage and sparked a three goal run for the Bulldogs. Kutner would score again on the man-up off a feed from McArdle to make the score 11-4. Less than two minutes later Cernuto would send one in on a sidearm effort after coming from behind the net to close the gap to 11-5. After a quick Eli goal, Kutner would score with four seconds left in the third quarter to cut the lead to 12-6 heading into the final period.
It would be as close as St. John's would come however as the Bulldogs would use seven fourth quarter goals to bring it to the 19-6 final.
St. John's returns home next weekend as the Siena Saints travel to Queens for a 1 p.m. showdown. Keep up with Red Storm lacrosse all season long at RedStormSports.com and on Twitter by following @STJ_Lacrosse.
