List of qualifiers for NCAA Championship competition
QUEENS, N.Y. - On Sunday, March 11, St. John's sent 20 fencers to the Northeast Regionals at Boston College in Chestnut Hill, Mass. to compete for NCAA Championship qualification. In the process, St. John's claimed three of the six weapons titles and nine of its twenty participants placed in the top-three.
Junior Evgeniya Kirpicheva won the women's foil Northeast Regionals title after an impressive 22-1 performance. She did not lose a bout until the fourth and final pool. The women's team captain led the entire St. John's teams in regular season wins (47) and has won bronze at the past two NCAA Championships.
After winning a three-way playoff in the fifth and final round of women's saber, sophomore Anna Limbach claimed a women's saber Regionals championship with a 20-win performance. As a freshman, Limbach placed eighth at the 2011 NCAA Championships.
Despite finishing the regular season with less wins than his classmates Max Blitzer and Eli Schenkel, sophomore Wilfred Curioso claimed the Northeast Regionals title in men's foil. Curioso went 8-2 in the third and final pool, including wins over both of his squad mates.
NCAA Regionals are not a team event, as participants competed individually for NCAA Championship qualification. The maximum number of athletes a school can qualify for NCAA Championships is 12 (two for each weapon). Today, the NCAA will finalize a list of qualifiers for NCAA Championship competition. Qualification is based on regular season play as well as Regional results.
