QUEENS, N.Y. - Junior Adam Watson was named a Primetime Performer by College Fencing 360 for his work on the strip this past weekend. The former U.S. Junior National Team member went 8-1 at the Temple Invitational on Saturday and helped lead the men's epee squad to a gold medal at the U.S. Collegiate Squad Championships on Sunday.
Watson, who did not qualify for the NCAA Championships last season, is fencing behind two seniors on the men's epee squad, but is proving he is more than capable of taking one of their spots at this year's NCAA Championship.
The native of Enosburg, Vt. has a 34-16 record on the year and leads the four-man epee squad in wins. Senior and team captain Marat Israelian is 31-16. Senior Nicholas Vomero is 31-15 and sophomore Andrew Dobbie is 15-13.
At the Temple Invitational, Watson went 3-0 vs. No. 2 Penn State and No. 4 Princeton and 2-1 vs. No. 8 Duke. He had the most wins on the men's epee squad and tied for second-most on the men's team at the event.
At the U.S. Collegiate Squad Championships, Watson and his teammates rallied off four consecutive victories against Stevens Tech, Brown, Ohio State, and Princeton en route to a gold medal finish. The top-seeded epee squad defeated all opposing schools by a double-digit margin.
Watson and the Red Storm fencing team return to action at the Northeast Regional Championships at Boston College on March 11. The event determines which fencers qualify for the NCAA Championship, which begins on March 22.
WATSON: INTERNATIONAL MAN OF MYSTERY
Fun fact about Adam Watson: he was born in Cowansville, Quebec, Canada and is a Canadian, American, and Swiss citizen.
