Ponce, Puerto Rico (March, 5 2012)-- The St. John's men's golf team kept up its strong play through the second round of the Caribbean Intercollegiate with a 287(-1), for the Red Storm's second-straight under-par round and leads Rollins by one stroke heading into Wednesday's final round.
Sophomore Pat Wilson shot a season-low 68(-4) for a two round total of 137(-7) and a five stroke lead in the individual competition.
"The conditions were even tougher out there today, and our guys played really well," head coach Frank Darby said. "Those kind of conditions are great for us, especially when we head to number one Texas' event next weekend and we can really learn from them. We had a chance for an even bigger lead and a few bogeys at the end pulled the score up a bit, but it was another really good day."
Wilson had a chance to create an almost insurmountable lead in the individual race after sitting seven-under after fourteen, but a few late bogeys kept his lead at five strokes. On day three, he'll receive some pressure from teammate sophomore Ryan McCormick who posted a 74(+2) on day two and is one of four players tied for second place at two-under for the tournament.
Junior Jeremy Quinn also had a strong day on the course with a 71(-1) for his best round of 2011-12 and is currently tied for ninth. Senior Mark Costanza shot a 74(+2) and is tied for 23rd, while freshman Mitch Hadfield shot a 79(+7) to round out the scoring for St. John's.
Freshman Dylan Crowley shot a 75(+3) and is tied for 12th competing as an individual.
St. John's will be back on the Costa Caribe Resort course Wednesday for the final round as it tries to claim its first title of the season and as all six men's golfers stay in contention for the first STJ individual title since Evan Bierne took home the Mission Inn Intercollegiate title in October of 2010.
