QUEENS, N.Y. - After the 2012 Olympic Games kick off with the Opening Ceremony tonight at 7:30 p.m., senior Daryl Homer and Red Storm fencing alum Dagmara Wozniak begin competition on July 29 and Aug. 1, respectively.
Beginning with the quarterfinals, the women's individual saber event will be broadcast live on MSNBC on Wednesday, Aug. 1.
With a cable, satellite, or telco TV subscription that includes MSNBC and CNBC, viewers can also access live streams of every Olympic event on NBColympics.com.
Homer, a first-time Olympian, was re-ranked from No. 12 in the world to No. 20 for Olympic play, but will still receive a bye in the Round of 64 in the men's individual saber event. He will face Romania's Tiberiu Dolniceanu in the Round of 32 on Sunday, July 29 at 7:10 a.m. ET. The entire men's individual saber event will be streamed online beginning at 5:25 a.m. The semifinals and finals will also be streamed online beginning at 12:55 p.m.
Homer then hits the strip again on Friday, Aug. 3 for the men's team saber event. The 2012 U.S. men's saber squad features two members of the 2008 silver-medalist team as well as its coach - St. John's own Yury Gelman.
U.S. men's saber faces a tough first round matchup in a Russian squad that placed fourth at the 2008 Games in Beijing. At the 2008 Games, the U.S. topped Russia, 45-44, in a memorable semifinal match that sent the U.S. to the gold medal event. Homer gets his first taste of the U.S.-Russian Olympic rivalry with the 2012 rematch, which begins at 6:30 a.m.
The entire men's team saber event will be streamed online beginning at 5:30 a.m. The semifinals and finals will be streamed at 7:30 a.m. and 9:30 a.m., respectively.
With the women's team saber event being eliminated at the 2012 Olympics, Wozniak will compete solely in the women's individual saber event on Wednesday, Aug. 1. Wozniak, who is making her second-career Olympics appearance, was re-ranked from No. 12 in the world to No. 10 for Olympic play. She will face Egypt's Salma Mahran in the Round of 32 at 8:10 a.m.
The entire women's individual saber event will be streamed online beginning at 8:10 a.m., but MSNBC will also broadcast the quarterfinals live at 10:30 a.m., the semifinals at 1:45 p.m., and the finals at 3:30 p.m.
At the 2008 Olympic Games, U.S. women's saber swept the podium in the individual event, taking all three medal spots.
