QUEENS, N.Y. - St. John's fencing is set to compete in two invitationals this weekend against several elite fencing programs from across the nation. On Saturday, Jan. 26, the Red Storm will host Notre Dame, Penn State, Columbia, Harvard, and Ohio State - the defending NCAA champions - at the St. John's Invitational. The six participants in this year's St. John's Invitational have combined to win every NCAA Championship since 1990, the year men's and women's teams began competing together. The field of competition also includes nine 2012 London Olympians, including six members of Team USA.
The St. John's Invitational will start at 10 a.m. with the last round of matches set to begin at 3:30 p.m. A complete competition schedule can be found below. Live coverage on ESPN3, begins at 2 p.m. with Ralph Bednarczyk and 2012 Olympian Jeff Spear on the call. The broadcast will begin with highlights from the event's earlier matches and move onto a live production of the St. John's vs. Notre Dame match, which is scheduled to start at 2:15 p.m. The broadcast will then conclude with live action of the St. John's vs. Harvard match, which is scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m.
The Red Storm will then make the quick trip over to Manhattan for the NYU Invitational on Sunday, Jan. 27. St. John's will take on Notre Dame, Ohio State, Columbia, Wayne State, and host school NYU.
"This weekend will act as a measuring stick for what we will see during the NCAA Championships," redshirt senior and 2012 Olympian Daryl Homer said.
