St. John's athletes competed across three states and against the nation's best competition at the Meyo Invitational, Armory Collegiate and the New Balance Indoor Grand Prix from Friday, Feb. 1 to Saturday, Feb. 2.
The current St. John's team was split between the Meyo Invitational at the University of Notre Dame and the Armory Collegiate at the New York City Armory. Red Storm alumna Priscilla Frederick placed third in the high jump at the New Balance Grand Prix at the New Balance Indoor Grand Prix in Boston, Mass.
The Red Storm's top mid-distance sprinters so far this season, Molly Ellis and Claire Mooney, both turned in top-ten finishes in their respective events against very competitive fields. Mooney placed second in the 500-meter run with a time of 1:16.54 as she was bested by conference rival Megan Yanik of Notre Dame by just three tenths of a second. Ellis finished tenth in a 72-person field in the 400-meter run by clocking in at 55.84 seconds. Mooney also ran in the 200-meter dash for the first time this season and ran a 25.77 second split.
Shayna Presley crossed the line at 1:17.72 in the 500-meters to place 14th and finish in the top-half of competition. Trudy-Ann McLean joined Ellis in the 400-meter run a 57.30 second time to place 29th. The senior also ran a 26.05 second heat in the 200-meter dash as Presley also recorded a 26.42 second effort. Freshman Pariis Garcia continued to develop as a threat in the 400-meters with a 58.25 second time.
The Red Storm also featured a number of runners in the distance events at the Meyo Invitational. Veronica Thompson ran a 2:17.03 in the 800-meters with Stephanie Van Pelt clocking in at 2:20.82 and Alexis Bean crossing the finish at 2:23.95 in the event as well. Finishing just a tenth of a second off of her career-best, Michelle Duffy ran an impressive 5:12.87 in the mile run. Kerri Butler finished the mile in 5:28.42.
St. John's also entered a distance medley relay team at the event as well and placed ninth with a 12:31.74 finish. The team was comprised of Duffy, Ellis, Thompson and Butler.
At the Armory Collegiate event, Danette Hinton turned in the top performance for the Red Storm with a tenth-place 18.29 meter weight throw performance. Hinton missed her career-best mark by .02 meters, which she set last week at the Metropolitan Indoor Championships. Of probably greatest importance to Hinton was the fact that her sister Denise of LSU grabbed sibling bragging rights by finishing second in the weight throw event. St. John's throwers Natasha Amazan and Ann Dagrin also competed in the weight throw as Amazan placed 29th at 16.16 meters and Dagrin posted a 15.61 meter mark.
Stephanie Barnes competed in the long jump and triple jump events for St. John's at the Armory Collegiate. She recorded an 11.38 meter finish in the triple jump and 4.90 meters in the long jump.
LaTasha Collins ran 8.02 seconds in the 60-meters and 26.17 seconds in the 200-meters. Freshman Shenika King clocked in at 58.93 seconds in the 400-meters. Tiffany Evanego ran the 500-meters at 1:21.78.
Frederick competed against some of the nation's top high jumpers at the New Balance Indoor Grand Prix and finished third. She cleared the 1.78 meter mark in her second try but failed to clear the 1.83 meter bar.
