Philadelphia, Pa. - St. John's track & field brought the crowd of 50,000 fans to its feet multiple times at the Penn Relays with a number of standout performances.
"Our team showed that they could run with the best in the nation," said head coach Jim Hurt. "We had leads in the 4x100, 4x200 and 4x400-meter relays at the biggest meet in the country. We are looking forward to continued success at the BIG EAST Championships next weekend in New Jersey."
A team of Molly Ellis, Rikka Lovely, Trudy-Ann McLean and Shenika King ran a school record 1:35.25 in the 4x200-meter relay. The time placed St. John's second in the 4x200-meters ECAC division. The Red Storm was charging fast toward the finish line, but Coppin State surpassed St. John's in the final stretch to take the title.
The 4x400-meter squad also battled the nation's best and turned in another solid showing. Claire Mooney, Ellis, McLean and Shayna Presley ran a 3:42.59 to place 15th overall in a 79-team field. Mooney and Ellis had the Red Storm leading after two legs until Maryland-Eastern Shore and Georgetown overtook them in the final stages to slot St. John's third-place in the heat.
Veronica Thompson, Michelle Duffy, Stephanie Van Pelt and Kerri Butler ran a 9:11.13 to place 16th in the 4x800-meter relay. The 4x100-meter squad of Ellis, Lovely, McLean and LaTasha Collins was battling for a top spot but dropped the baton on the final switch to record a disqualification.
Presley also ran a 1:03.02 in the 400-meter hurdles to place 46th overall. Stephanie Barnes also achieved a 5.09 meter mark in the long jump and a 10.86 meter distance in the triple jump.
