QUEENS, N.Y. - At her seventh-career Pan American Games, Red Storm alum Dagmara Wozniak won bronze in women's individual saber and helped lead Team USA to gold in the women's team saber event. The bronze is the third medal of her individual Pan American career, while the gold marks the seventh consecutive year Wozniak and U.S. women's saber have been champions of the Pan American Games.
"It was a hard competition, but was a good preparation for the Senior World Championships in August," Wozniak said. "Hopefully, I can bring home my first Senior Worlds medal."
In her Pan American career, Wozniak has now won two individual bronze medals and one individual silver medal. Wozniak, who placed eighth individually at the 2012 Olympics, is currently ranked No. 2 in the U.S. and No. 6 in the world.
The Pan American Games were held in Cartagena, Colombia from June 16-21. The Pan American Sports Organization consists of 41 nations spanning North America and South America. Team USA won the 2013 fencing medal count with 14 individual medals and six team medals.
Fellow London Olympian and St. John's alum Daryl Homer also competed in the Pan American Games, winning bronze in men's individual saber - the second medal of his Pan Am career. However, due to work commitments, Homer withdrew from the team event. Homer is currently ranked No. 1 in the U.S. and No. 7 in the world.
