Following the draw, there exists a four-way tie at the top of the BIG EAST standings between St. John's, Marquette (6-5-2, 2-0-1), Georgetown and DePaul.
"I thought we battled really hard against a really good Marquette team," said head coach Ian Stone. "I thought it was a great game. It could have gone either way and neither team was really playing for the tie, but that's the way it ended up."
Freshman Jesse Schaefer tallied her first career goal for St. John's after a friendly corner kick bounced off a Marquette defender's head and right to her foot in the 68th minute, which she promptly buried in the back of net.
Schaefer was part of a St. John's back four that played an outstanding game in limiting the Golden Eagles to only one goal. The starting line up consisted of two freshmen, Schaefer and Mikhaila Martinov, and two seniors, Georgia Kearney-Perry and Chelsey Martino, who combined to minimize the number of legitimate scoring chances for Marquette. When the Golden Eagles did get a decent look at the cage, Diana Poulin often came up to stop them, registering four saves.
Jen Gibbons and Emily Cubbage were also impressive for St. John's in the defensive midfield.
Marquette struck first in the match, as Mary Luba tallied her fourth goal of the season to put the Golden Eagles up with just under eight minutes remaining in the first half. The goal ended a scoreless streak for Poulin that was just shy of encompassing four full games, finally coming to an end after 330 minutes.
Following Schaefer's equalizer in the 68th minute, the Red Storm had a few very good looks at the cage that could have put them ahead. In the 81st, minute, Caitlyn McLaughlin's header off a cross sailed just wide of the goal post. Just over three minutes later, Marquette goalkeeper Amanda Engel made a game-saving stop for the Golden Eagles, turning away a Rachel Daly try from just a few yards in front of the cage.
During this stretch, Poulin also came up huge for the Red Storm, making a game-saving stop of her own on Heather Handwork in the 76th minute.
The two teams combined for only three shots, none of which were on goal, during the two overtime periods and both walked away with a point.
The Red Storm returns to action at Belson Stadium on Sunday, October 5, playing host to Butler at 1 p.m. That game will be broadcast live on the BIG EAST Digital Network.
