Watching his daughter, Rachel, play in person for the first time in college, Mr. Daly saw her score both goals in a 2-1 overtime win for the Red Storm over Butler (7-7-0, 1-3-0) on Sunday afternoon at Belson Stadium.
With the win, the Red Storm moved to 7-5-1 overall with a 3-0-1 in conference play, maintaining its share of first place in the league.
Dating back to its win over Stony Brook on September 18, the Red Storm is now unbeaten in its last five games, four of which have been victories.
Daly's two-goal performance also moved her up in the Red Storm record book, giving her sole possession of third place on the career points list and the career goals list, passing Lisa Anschlower in both categories. The Harrogate, England, native now has 30 goals and 64 points for her St. John's career.
Seniors Georgia Kearney-Perry and Chelsey Martino, along with goalkeeper Diana Poulin, anchored another outstanding performance from the St. John's defenders. The Red Storm has not allowed more than one goal in a game since September 14 at Dartmouth.
Butler got on the board first in the match, as Elise Kotsakis, one of the leading scorers in the conference, put the Bulldogs ahead, 1-0, in the 23rd minute.
Less than four minutes later, the Red Storm drew a foul inside the box, setting up Rachel Daly with the team's first penalty kick opportunity of the season. The junior All-American buried it in the upper half, knotting the game at one.
The two squads remained scoreless through the remainder of regulation, but the Red Storm did not need long in the extra period to come away with the win. Freshman defender Mikhaila Martinov sent a ball into the zone from the left side, which was then headed by Emily Cubbage directly to a wide-open Daly. Daly promptly rocketed the ball in the back of the net, sealing the victory just 46 seconds into the extra period.
The assist marked the first point of Martinov's career.
The Red Storm will next be in action a week from today when it travels to Villanova for a 1 p.m. match up with the Wildcats.
