QUEENS, N.Y. - Former St. John's reliever Danny Burawa has been added to the 40-man roster of the New York Yankees, as announced by the organization. Burawa pitched for both the Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders and the Double-A Trenton Thunder this past season.
"We are very excited that the Yankees have added Danny to their 40-man roster," said St. John's head coach Ed Blankmeyer. "He has a big arm and huge potential and I think the Yankees recognize that. With continued growth and development, he's going to set himself up to have a great career."
Burawa combined to go 3-1 with four saves and a 4.70 ERA in 42 appearances in Triple-A and Double-A last season. The righty added 73 strikeouts in 59.1 innings of work. In 31 appearances with the Triple-A RailRiders, Burawa was 3-1 with three saves and a 5.95 ERA to go with 55 strikeouts in 42.1 innings. The righty made 11 appearances with the Double-A Thunder and went 0-0 with one save and a 1.59 ERA, while striking out 18 in 17.0 innings of work.
The reliever had a breakout season with the Thunder in 2013, going 6-3 with four saves and a 2.59 ERA in 46 appearances. Burawa added 66 strikeouts in 66.0 innings, while limiting the opposition to just a .202 batting average.
Drafted in the 12th round (385th overall) of the 2010 MLB Draft, Burawa earned third team All-BIG EAST honors in 2010 after going 1-0 with 12 saves and 4.18 ERA. The righty made a team-high 30 appearances, while racking up 31 strikeouts and holding the opposition to a .236 batting average in 23.2 innings of work. Burawa, who set a conference record with three saves in the 2010 BIG EAST Tournament, ranks fourth in the St. John's all-time single-season record books with his 12-save performance that season.
