Daly, Cubbage Recognized by NSCAA as Scholar Athletes

QUEENS, N.Y. - Following a season that saw their team come within a penalty kick of the BIG EAST title game, juniors Rachel Daly and Emily Cubbage have been recognized by the NSCAA for their excellence on the pitch and in the classroom.
Daly was named NSCAA Scholar All-America, earning a spot on the second team and becoming the first player in program history to garner that distinction.
Cubbage, a midfielder from Rio Rancho, N.M., found a place on the All-East Region Second Team.
Daly, a Harrogate, England, native, earns the distinction following a stellar campaign that saw her rank among the most prolific scorers in the BIG EAST. She finished the year with eight goals, more than the double the next-highest total on the squad. Daly also recorded two assists on the season, bringing her point total to 18.
Daly ranked second in the BIG EAST in shots with over four per contest, eighth in goals and ninth in points. She also finished among the conference leaders in game-winning goals with three.
Last year, Daly became the first NSCAA All-America selection in program history after leading the nation in goals with 23.
Despite falling short of her NCAA-leading scorer numbers a season ago, Daly constantly drew the praise of Head Coach Ian Stone, who pointed out that Rachel became a more complete player this season, arguably doing more to help the team earn a victory than she did as a sophomore.
Cubbage, a three-year starter for Coach Stone, was one of the unsung heroes on a squad that recorded the Red Storm's best-ever winning percentage in BIG EAST play, helping St. John's compile a record of 6-2-1.
The midfielder started all 20 contests for the Red Storm, continuing a streak that has seen her start every game possible during her St. John's career. In the process, Cubbage picked up one goal and two assists for four points.
Cubbage was an anchor in a Red Storm defensive unit that proved to be one of the most formidable in program history, recording shutouts in nine of its 11 wins.
Cubbage is the first NSCAA Scholar All-East Region selection for the Red Storm since Amy Marron in 2012. Marron served as a volunteer assistant for St. John's this season.
In addition to Daly and Cubbage's honors, Caitlyn McLaughlin and Diamond Thomas were named Honorable Mention Scholar All-East Region.
McLaughlin, a senior from Fairfax Station, Va., tallied two goals and four assists on the season, concluding her career as the most productive player in the class of 2015.
Thomas, a junior from Marietta, Ga., worked her way into the starting line up as a junior, playing a critical role on the St. John's back line that proved to be one of the best in school history.
