NEW YORK, N.Y. - Sharing the spotlight with some of the sport's biggest names, five Red Storm track & field student-athletes and one St. John's alumnae competed at New York City's marquee track & field event this weekend at the 2014 NYRR Millrose Games at the New Balance Armory Track & Field Center located in the Washington Heights section of Manhattan.
On Friday, senior Danette Hinton notched a sixth-place finish in the women's elite division weight throw thanks to a mark of 17.96 meters. Not far behind Hinton, alumnae Chanel King reached 16.53 meters to place eighth and make it two Red Storm representatives in the top-10.
On Saturday, sophomore Pariis Garcia, junior Claire Mooney and seniors Rikka Lovely and Amber Allen teamed up to place second out of six teams in the Eastern college women's 4x400-meter relay in a time of 3:43.87, less than two seconds slower than the Red Storm's seasonal-best time set last week at the Armory Collegiate Invitational. Less than a second ahead of St. John's, BIG EAST rival Rutgers ran 3:43.04 to break the tape first.
"Having two St. John's throwers in Danette and Chanel place at the Millrose Games against the top throwers in the nation was exciting and very gratifying," said St. John's head coach Jim Hurt. "We ran an exciting race in the 4x400, leading all the way to the last lap. This group will keep getting faster as we reach the upcoming championship meets."
The Red Storm returns to the New Balance Armory Track & Field Center next weekend for the BIG EAST Championship on Feb. 21-22.
