Shepard Finishes Top-50 In Junior Olympics

QUEENS, N.Y. - Sophomore Trevor Shepard was the only member of the St. John's fencing team to compete at the Junior Olympics this past weekend, in Portland, Ore. Shepard competed in the Junior Men's Epee Division, finishing in 49th place. Shepard was seeded 50th coming into the competition.
Shepard started his competition in pool play where he recorded a 4-2 mark, tying him for second in his respected pool. After pool play, Shepard was seeded 65th out of a possible 256 fencers. After receiving a bye in the first round, Shepard went on to beat the No. 63 seed Wesley Johnson with a score of 15-8, thus reaching the round of 64. Shepard met the No. 1 overall seed, Nicholas Wilson, in the next round. Shepard nearly pulled off an upset, but lost by a slim margin of 15-14.
Red Storm fencing's next event will be the Temple invitational on Feb. 22nd, in Philadelphia, Pa. Duke, Penn State, Princeton, host school Temple will be competing in the event as well.
