Red Storm Opens 2014 Season At Kiawah Island Classic

KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. - The St. John's women's golf team is set to open the 2014 spring season on Monday at the Kiawah Island Classic on Kiawah Island, S.C., marking the final season-opener for four Red Storm graduating seniors.
Coming off of a strong fall performance that was highlighted by a quartet of top-five finishes and a second-straight victory at the St. John's Invitational, the Red Storm looks to continue its momentum into the spring season as it heads to the Kiawah Island Classic for the third consecutive year.
Leading the way will be the team's four seniors, who all finished the fall season with a stroke average under 80, earning seven combined top-10 finishes and a pair of first-place titles.
Harin Lee and Jennifer Neville led the way in the fall with a 76.0 stroke average through the team's four events while Rachel Carpenter ended with a 78.11 and Stephanie Eybers finished with a 79.44.
Sophomore transfer Anna Kim wrapped up her first fall season as a St. John's golfer with a 78.29 stroke average, competing in three events for the Red Storm. Junior Cameron Lambertson competed in all four events for a stroke average of 82.11 while sophomore Brittany Hurst finished with an average of 91.0 through two events as an individual.
In each of the last two years at the event, the Red Storm has finished in 14th place in the three-day tournament.
About The Tournament
For the sixth consecutive year, the College of Charleston will play host to the largest tournament in the country with 36 teams competing in three, 18-hole rounds of golf at the Kiawah Island Golf Resort on Kiawah Island, S.C.
The tournament will begin on Sunday, March 2, as each team will play 18 holes on either Oak Point Course or Cougar Point Course with double tee times from 9:45 a.m. to 12:06 p.m. Teams will then play the opposite course on Monday, March 3, on an adjusted schedule from 9 a.m. to 11:15 a.m.
The top 19 teams will then play for the Championship at Cougar Point on Tuesday, March 4, while the other 17 teams will play a flight championship at Oak Point with a 9 a.m. shotgun start.
About The Field
The Kiawah Island Classic is the biggest collegiate golfing event in the nation, hosting 36 teams: Arkansas State, Bethune-Cookman, Boston College, Boston University, Bucknell, Charleston Southern, Chattanooga, The Citadel, College of Charleston, Delaware, Elon, Florida Gulf Coast, Georgetown, High Point, Jacksonville State, Kent State, Loyola-Chicago, Marshall, Newberry, Niagara, North Florida, Northern Kentucky, UNCG, Penn State, Radford, Richmond, Rutgers, Samford, St. John's, Tennessee Tech, Towson, Troy, USC Upstate, Western Kentucky, William & Mary and Wyoming.
As of Feb. 24, five teams in the field are currently ranked in the Top 100 by GolfWeek: No. 40 Kent State, No. 55 College of Charleston, No. 70 Chattanooga, No. 73 Penn State, No. 89 Jacksonville State and No. 91 Samford. The Golf World/Nike Golf Coaches Poll (as of Feb. 26) also ranks Arkansas State at No. 30.
About The Courses
The Kiawah Island Classic will take place on Kiawah Island Golf Resort on Kiawah Island, S.C. The resort is home to two courses that will be used during the event, the Cougar Point Course and the Oak Point Course.
Cougar Point is a 6,001 yard, par-72 course that will be host to the championship round on March 4, while Oak Point is a 5,902 yard, par-72 course that will host the flight championship round.
